So you know your site needs some search engine optimization (SEO) but you’re not sure where to start. Well here are some quick SEO tips that will help you get started:
1) Keyword Research – The first step is to find what keywords your page should be targeting. I would suggest no more than one or two primary keywords to start with. Then you should head over to the Google Keyword tool and find which keywords will drive the most traffic for you.
2) On-Page Optimization – Now that you have your keywords, what do you do with them? Incorporation your keywords into the items mentioned below in the code of your page. You will need to know some HTML to make these changes, or contact your webmaster to help you.
- Title Tag - The title tag is the text that appears at the top of your browser window, and more importantly, in the listing on search results page. You will need to use your keyword in the title tag at least once. I would suggest keeping the keyword as close to the front of the sentence as possible. Limit the text to 70 characters. - Meta Description – This is the text that helps describe the content on the page. This text may also show as the description on your search engine listings. Try to keep it less than 160 characters. Include your keyword once and maybe twice in this text.
- Meta Keywords – This is not really used by search engines any more. Google says “we generally ignore the contents of the “keywords” meta tag… you can use it for other purposes – it won’t count against you.” We recommend keeping this tag in your code.
- Keyword in H1 Tag - For the main headline of the page we recommend highlighting it with an <h1> tag. This will tell the search engines that this text is important to the page. Be sure your keywords are in the H1 tag. Only use the <h1> tag once on the page. You can also use <h2>, <h3> and so on, tags as well. These tags are less important to the search engines.
- Keyword At Least 3 Times in the Body Copy – We recommend that you include your keyword at least 3 times in the body copy on your page. If you have a fairly large amount of text on your page then you can add it a few more times. However, it probably won’t effect your search rankings having more than 3 times in a page. And, if you have it an excessive amount of times your page may actually be hurt by this.
- Keyword At Least Once In Bold - We suggest you bold at least one of your keywords in your page. Again, this will tell the search engines that this word is important.
- Image ALT Tag – You should incorporate your keyword at least once in an image alt tag. This will help index your image correctly and will help identify your image.
- Image Title Tag - We recommend the use of a title tag with your images. This will help with usability, will help index your image correctly and will once again help identify your image.
- Include Keyword Once In The Page URL – Be sure to include your keyword in your URL. This will help with rankings. Read more about creating search engine friendly URLs.
If you follow these tips your page should be properly optimized so the search engines will index them correctly.
